Widely hailed as the UK’s most popular and successful choreographer/director, Matthew is the creator of the world’s longest running West End and Broadway dance production, a five-time Olivier Award-winner, and the only British director to have won the Tony Award for both Choreographer and Director of a Musical.
He is artistic director of New Adventures (formally Adventures in Motion Pictures), which has created an unprecedented new audience for dance with its groundbreaking, multi-award-winning dance/theatre productions: Nutcracker! Highland Fling, Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Car Man, Play Without Words, Edward Scissorhands and Dorian Gray.
His long association with Cameron Mackintosh includes the hit musicals Oliver! (1994 and 2009 Olivier nomination); My Fair Lady (Olivier Award); and the West End and Broadway hit musical Mary Poppins (Olivier Award and Tony nomination). He has also choreographed the musicals Children of Eden (original production); Show Boat (Malmo); and South Pacific (National Theatre).
Matthew Bourne has twice been nominated as Best Director at the Olivier Awards, and his achievements in choreography and direction have been recognised with over 30 international awards and honours. In the 2001 New Year honours, Matthew was awarded an OBE from HM The Queen for services to dance. He is also the proud recipient of five honorary doctorates; a companionship from his former college, Trinity Laban; and is patron of the Arts Educational School and LIPA. This year, he celebrates 25 years as a professional choreographer and director with a programme of major revivals and original work for his company, New Adventures, culminating in the world premiere of his latest production, Sleeping Beauty, which will tour throughout the UK.
