Lara is delighted to make her West End debut with The Phantom of the Opera and would like to thank her family for their continual support.
Training: Lara began her studies in her native Portugal. She went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, supported by a Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship, with Laura Sarti, graduating with a First Class Hons degree, then joined the young artists’ programme of the Centre National d’Insertion Professionelle des Artistes Lyriques (Cnipal, Marseille).
Opera includes: Fifth Maid in Elektra by R Strauss conducted by Gustav Kuhn (Modena, Ferrara, Piacenza and Bolzano), Sofia in Il Signor Bruschino by Rossini (Opéra National de Bordeaux), Blondchen in Entfürung aus dem Serail (Opera de Marseille), Clarissa in Die Drei Pintos by Weber/Mahler and Princess Hirvaia in Offenbach’s Dick Whittington and his Cat (Bloomsbury), Flaminia in Haydn’s Il Mondo della Luna (Opera East), Adina in L’Elisir d’amore (Swansea City Opera), Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro (Teatro da Trindade, Lisbon), Despina in Cosi fan Tutte (Teatro Rivoli, Oporto) and Madame Siberklang in Der Schauspieldirektor (International Music Festival of Algarve). She works regularly with Portuguese National Opera (Teatro Nacional de São Carlos), including Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Elvira in L’Italiana in Algeri, Elena in Il Capello di Paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota and Princess in El Gato Con Botas (Puss-in-boots) by Xavier Montsalvage. Lara has an interest in modern opera, which led to her singing Kristin in Phillippe Boesmans’s Julie (Italian premiere, Teatro Comunale di Bolzano), The Bread Seller and Solo voice in the Cathedral in The Nose by D. Shostakovich conducted by Donato Renzetti (Portuguese premiere, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos), Parasha in Stravinsky’s Mavra (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon) and Alice, a trapeze artist, in Circus Tricks by Mike Henry (Tête-a-Tête Opera Festival, London).
Concerts include: regular solo appearances with the major Portuguese orchestras. Also, Exultate et Jubilate by Mozart (Kremlin, Moscow) accompanied by the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, who invited her back the following season to sing Schubert’s Salve Regina (Glazunov Gallery, Moscow), solo song recital (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon), Bachianas Brasileiras no 5 by Villa Lobos (Tibor Varga Festival, Switzerland), Seven Popular Spanish Songs by Manuel de Falla (Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille) and gala concerts at the Opera de Toulon, Opera de Marseille, Opera d’Avignon and the Floral Hall at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Television and radio include: broadcasting live for RAI (Radio Audizioni Italiane), Antena 2 (Portuguese classical radio) and RTP (Portuguese national television).
Lara has been awarded prizes including the Donizetti Prize at the Jaumme Aragall singing competition in Spain, English song prize and the Anne Wyburd Award at GSMD, second prize at the Iberian Voices international singing competition, and first prize at the Concurso de Interpretação de Música do Estoril, Portugal.
