Golden Mask is the National Theatre Award established in 1993 by the Theatre Union of Russian Federation. The Golden Mask Award is the most prestigious award given to productions in all genres of theatre art: drama, opera, ballet, modern dance, operetta, musical, and puppet theatre.
Each year the Awards Ceremony is enjoyed by tens of thousands of people as part of the annual Golden Mask Festival, and 2014 marks the festival’s 20th consecutive year! The ceremony will be held at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow on April 18 and will feature a very special multi-Phantom multi-Christine performance from some very familiar faces!
Australian actress Anna O’Byrne who has played the role of Christine in both the Phantom of the Opera (numerous productions) and the Australian production & movie of Phantom sequel Love Never Dies will be joined by the West End’s longest running Phantom to date, John Owen-Jones. With nearly 2000 performances under his belt he is no stranger to special Phantom events. He has performed the role at the Royal Variety Performance in London and the 25th Anniversary performances in both London AND New York!
Our German friends over at “Das Phantom Der Oper” in Hamburg have also allowed us to borrow their alternate Phantom David Arnsperger and alternate Christine Lauri Brons for this momentous performance.
Two special guests from the new production of Phantom in Moscow (coming later this year) bring the total to 3 x Phantoms and 3 x Christines, performing together to celebrate the Golden Mask’s special anniversary.
